General Information-Work

Competitive Employment – is a full or part time job that pays competitive wages and benefits. These types of jobs come with full responsibilities of the career and typically the employee does not need to have outside supports. Initial supports are given when necessary, but normally long-term support is considered supported employment.

Segregated Employment – consists of individuals with disabilities to work in a self-contained environment. Segregated programs are generally the option of students with limited physical capabilities, behaviors not appropriate for within the community or functioning levels that require a structured environment with little distractions and a high level of support.

Supported Employment – includes long-term support services while on the job. This support is habitually given by job coaches who understand the rules, responsibilities and needed accommodations of the vocation. The amount of services needed may be reduced as the individual becomes more accustomed to his/her occupation. Supported employment continues to have necessary support provided as long as the individual holds a job.
