Adult Enrichment Programs

Meetings are held every 2nd and 4th Thursday. Camp Civitan is help yearly.

Purpose or mission statement of organization: The mission of Civitan is to unite a volunteer association of clubs to serve individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

Description: Art camp is held annually to enhance creativity in blind and visually impaired children by providing opportunities to explore several different art mediums. Student work is often displayed at the Kalamazoo Art Institute.

Description: A group of volunteers helping the visually impaired to ski downhill.

Transportation: No transportation available for practices although some individuals do car pool when possible. For tournaments there is a moderate fee for travel and lodging.

Description: Groups meet weekly during the school year for practice and games. Goal ball is a combination of hockey and soccer using a ball with a bell inside. The ball is passed between a three-member team who attempt to score over a tactile goal.

Description: This program is offered once a year in January with a nominal fee for ski rental. It is a weekend program at Higgins Lake in upper Michigan.

Description: Sports Camp is held at Western Michigan University and is available for school aged students during the month of May. Students stay in WMU dorms. It is a one week program where students have the opportunity to participate in several sports activities that they may not have access to in their school programs.

Note: There are various camps for the visually impaired that occur in the summer. Information about these camps may be obtained by talking with your local teacher consultant for the visually impaired, who can be reached through your Regional Education Service Agency 269-471-7725.

Description: Area 17 Special Olympics has 847 registered athletes in three counties: Berrien, Cass and Van Buren. The program is volunteer based and offers year round sports and fitness activities. Special Olympics also has Unified Sports which includes Special Olympians and a non-handicapped partner.
