The Berrien County McKinney-Vento Project, one of the orginal federally funded Michigan McKinney Projects, has been serving homeless families and youth since 1993. An initiative of Berrien Regional Education Service Agency, the McKinney Project's outreach site and learning center is housed at Safe Shelter, our local domestic violence safe haven. The McKinney Project has established a well-equipped field site at the Shelter, which enables early identification and assistance of homeless youth, and provides a location for tutoring, arts and crafts, computer training, and parenting workshops. From the site, we coordinate services for homeless youth staying at area shelters, in attendance at area schools, and on the street and needing assistance. We can help to resolve problems with school enrollment, such as transportation, school supplies, transcripts, immunization records, and we serve as advocates for homeless parents, children, and youth.
